“The stable block” is situated within the court yard of Ackergill Tower, (an impressive 15th century Castle that sits along the shore of Sinclair Bay) the Stables has been sympathetically converted to form holiday let accommodation which consists off; Cobbled Main Entrance, 4 Bedrooms all with en-suite (2 Bedrooms have a private Sitting Room). An extension was built to form Communal Sitting Room, kitchen, and an outside Patio area, which has views of the beach and the rolling waves of Sinclair Bay.
Retaining the character of the property by re-using the stable stall dividers, saddle iron brackets, wooden saddle racks, linings, cobble stones, exposed roof beams, also leaving the original exposed stone walls throughout the building.
The main entrance contains the impressive original cobble stones which had been carefully uplifted and restored, then set aside ready to be re-instated back in to the floor of the stables.
Saddle Iron Brackets and Wooden Saddle Racks has also been restored and now decorates the walls, the exposed roof beams were also originals, which has been restored and installed into the main entrance. The front door features wrought-iron ironmongery.
Bedroom No 1 provides disabled facilities, the en-suite has a “wet room” shower area, and Caithness Slate Floor with under floor heating. The bedroom décor wallpaper is a traditional “Horse and Hound” scene, with the lower half walls incased in wood linings, and then painted. Within the bedroom the showcase wall has the bed headboard and above it the striking restored wooden saddle racks.
Bedroom No 2 consists of 3 brand new windows formed in traditional style of “Sash and Case”.
It also houses the impressive horse stall dividers with their ornate posts and rings, the dividers were cleverly installed to create an area for the bed, and another separate changing area. Some of the original beams were re-instated, as were the wooden saddle racks, along with the restored linings which were painted to suit the décor. The en-suite boasts a “roll top bath” with claw feet, the vanity unit has a “His and Hers” basin, with the floor encased in Caithness Slate Flag Stone with under floor heating.
Bedroom No 3 was fitted with a Spiral Staircase which leads up to the Mezzanine sleeping area.
Where the exposed ceiling rafters with beaded linings were all restored and then re-instated. The original exposed stone wall is used as a feature bed headboard. There is a curved partition created below the staircase (reading room), down on the ground level which houses a bespoke radiator which is also curved to sit along aside the curvature, following along to the bespoke window seat. The sitting room is on the ground level, with an en-suite that has a Caithness Slate Floor with under floor heating.
Bedroom No 4 refurbishment included an Oak Staircase with oak treads and newal posts, leading to the mezzanine sleeping area where there are decorative alcoves built into the wall linings, with glass shelves, as an alternative to bedside tables. The exposed ceiling rafters with beaded linings were all restored and re-instated. The sitting room and en-suite both has oak flooring throughout and under floor heating in en-suite. The sitting room has a traditional “Stable Door” which leads out to a picnic grass area.
The communal sitting room and kitchen was formed from the original open courtyard, installing steel framed extension including foundations and erecting an unventilated insulated flat zinc roof and gutter with timber deck and double glazed screen walling. Part of the décor in the sitting room was one of the restored Horse Stall Dividers with their ornate posts, and the refurbished Wooden Wall Saddle Racks, giving the room a striking look. The wall to wall glass window and door opens out onto the patio area. The whole communal area has Caithness Flag Flooring throughout.
Lifting existing ground floors, excavating and providing new insulated concrete floor with various finishes, (Cobles, Caithness Slate, Wood and Carpet). Slapping new openings and installing new, replacing existing doors and windows with double glazed units. Stripping off all wall linings, framing out and insulating all external walls and lining with plasterboard and skim coat plaster and dado panels.
The Installation of new timber first floor Mezzanines to 2 units complete with timber dogleg and steel spiral access stairs. Forming steel framed extension including foundations and erecting an unventilated insulated flat zinc roof and gutter with timber deck and double glazed screen walling. Stripping out existing then providing new water and electrical supplies, new oil fired heating system and associated storage tank.
All existing rainwater goods were replaced with cast iron goods.
All outside walls were re-pointed with lime mortar.
Windows were all refurbished and any sandstone repairs carried out as required, new “Sash and Case” windows were all replaced throughout the building, the bespoke windows were all manufactured within our wood workshop, by our in-house Carpenter.

From the minute you walk into the “Stable Block” you are overwhelmed by the skilled workmanship involved with this historical refurbishment.
